Walking with Giants
Presented by the McAninch Arts Center and Cleve Carney Museum of Art with the College of DuPage Foundation,Walking with Giants is a free, outdoor, walkable exhibition marking the United States' 250th anniversary. Ten larger-than-life painted plywood silhouette sculptures — each seven to ten feet tall — are installed along a walking trail around the MAC campus, so the figures appear to rise up over hills and through trees.
In honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary, the McAninch Art Center and Cleve Carney Museum of Art, in association with the College of DuPage Foundation, present Walking With Giants, a free, outdoor, walkable exhibition celebrating American artistic achievement.
The exhibition features 10 larger-than-life painted silhouette sculptures, each approximately 10 feet tall, installed along a walkable route surrounding the MAC on the College of DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn. Developed with community input and created by contemporary artists, the works honor influential American figures in visual art, music, theater, and dance.
I was assigned to design and execute John Williams, Misty Copland, Norman Rockwell, Rogers and Hammerstein and Bob Fosse.
The technique I used is a combination of graphic and expression, a combination seldom attempted. I believe it is my rightful duty as an artist to move boundaries. My job is to stop the viewers for five more seconds. If that happens, then I believe it was worth the risk.
John Williams
John Towner Williams is an American Conductor and composer, who has composed some of film history's most recognizable scores. His style blends romanticism, impressionism, and atonal music with complex orchestration. Some say he reintroduced classic Hollywood film music techniques to a generation of moviegoers. Williams is also known for his lush symphonic style, which helped bring symphonic film scores back into fashion.
Misty Copland
Misty Danielle Copeland is an American author and ballet dancer who retired from the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in October 2025 after over 20 years. In 2015, she became the first Black woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the ABT's 75-year history. Copeland has performed iconic roles like Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, and Kitri in Don Quixote.
Norman Rockwell
Norman Percevel Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator who became famous for his depictions of American middle-class life. His cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post over nearly 50 years captured the essence of American culture through humorous and poignant moments. Rockwell's art evolved to address serious social issues like poverty and civil rights after World War II.
Rogers and Hammerstein
Rodgers and Hammerstein was a theater-writing team of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II, who together created a series of innovative and influential American musicals. Their musical theater writing partnership has been called the greatest of the 20th century.
Bob Fosse
Robert Louis Fosse was an American choreographer, dancer, actor, filmmaker, and stage director. He is known for his work on stage and screen, and was arguably the most influential figure in the field of jazz dance in the twentieth century.
